Do you need to collect sales tax in Alabama?

You have a duty to collect once you have nexus: physical presence (inventory, staff, an office) or economic nexus from crossing $250,000 in sales over previous calendar year. Alabama has never used a transaction-count trigger — only the sales figure matters.

The Alabama rate

The general Alabama state sales tax rate is 4%. Reduced rates apply to specific categories: automobiles (2%), farm equipment (1.5%), food/grocery (2%, with a temporary suspension May 1-June 30, 2026), manufacturing machinery (1.5%).

Marketplace and direct sales

Marketplaces like Amazon collect Alabama tax for you, but those sales don't count toward your own threshold. Direct sales on your own store you collect yourself.

Filing and zero returns

Once registered, Alabama requires a return every assigned period even when you owe $0 — miss one and you can face penalties. Monthly if average monthly liability is $200 or more in the preceding calendar year; quarterly if average monthly liability is less than $200; annual if total liability is less than $200 for the full preceding calendar year.

When you can cancel

If your Alabama returns are mostly $0, you may be over-registered. Canceling your Alabama sales tax registration makes sense once you have completed a full calendar year below the $250,000 threshold and your obligation for the trailing lookback year has ended. The process is online via My Alabama Taxes — you submit a closure request through 'Other Actions' and must file all outstanding returns and specify an effective closure date.
